Weight, Light Transmission, Thermal Insulation

Light weight

The hollow structure of multiwall polycarbonate means it is much lighter in weight when compared with glass.  For example:

  • 10mm twinwall sheet         weighs 1.7kg per square metre
  • 16mm triplewall sheet       weighs 2.7kg per square metre
  • 25mm sixwall sheet           weighs 3.5kg/3.5kg per square metre

  • 6mm glass                        weighs 15kg  per square metre

Light Transmission

The following figures for light transmission are based on 16mm triplewall sheet; the figure will increase or decrease depending on the thickness of the sheet.

  • Clear Sheet         74% light transmission
  • Opal Sheet          48% light transmission
  • Bronze Sheet      37% light transmission
  • Venetian Sheet   33% light transmission

Thermal Insulation

Because of its unique multiwall construction, polycarbonate glazing provides excellent thermal insulation when compared with glass.  This can result in massive energy savings.  It also provides better levels of comfort for people working beneath it as cold draughts are eliminated.

The U value ratings for the popular thicknesses of multiwall polycarbonate read as follows:

  • 10mm twinwall sheet     3.0
  • 16mm triplewall sheet   2.4
  • 25mm sixwall sheet       1.5
