Chester Zoo
Client: Chester Zoo
Twinfix System Used: Multi-Link-Panels
Speed of installation, which comes as standard with Twinfix's Multi-Link-Panel roof glazing system, was essential when 'The Tropical Realm' at Chester Zoo needed urgent re-glazing work after extensive storm damage. Forty three Multi-Link-Panels were installed, each combining a strong aluminium frame and clear 16mm multiwall polycarbonate glazing.
Due to the panels' unique patented 'fix and link' system, the entire project was completed in less than a day. All the panels were manufactured to size at the Twinfix factory and rapidly assembled by two teams on site, therefore minimising any risks to the exotic birds, endangered animals and tropical plants in the zoo's largest single enclosure.
Chester Zoo has recently been awarded with the Northwest Tourist Board's Environment Award in recognition of the zoo's impressive levels of energy efficiency. In keeping with these high standards, use of the Multi-Link-Panels has already helped reduce energy bills at the Tropical Realm, thanks to the increased levels of natural light permitted into the building. Maintaining the delicate tropical environment at approximately 20°C regardless of outside weather conditions can result in high heating overheads, which the multiwall glazing has also reduced due to its thermal insulation qualities.
Because the aluminium frame on each glazing panel is rust-resistant and the multiwall polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable, the expense of an ongoing maintenance programme is practically eliminated. Chester Zoo can look forward to continued energy efficiency and a trouble free long life for the Tropical Realm.
