Twinfix on Challenge Anneka – A Moment in Time

Twinfix on TV: Our Role in Challenge Anneka’s Sulwath Transformation Celebrating 35 Years of Innovation and Impact

As we mark 35 years of Twinfix, we’re reflecting on the defining moments that have shaped our journey — and one of the most memorable dates back to 1994, when we were invited to take part in a unique project that aired on national television.

That year, Twinfix featured in an episode of the BBC’s Challenge Anneka, a programme renowned for tackling ambitious community projects against the clock. Hosted by Anneka Rice, the challenge focused on a remarkable transformation involving a 70-foot decommissioned trawler named Sulwath.

A Challenge at Sea (and on Land)

The brief? To move Sulwath from Holyhead, North Wales, to Millom, Cumbria, where she would be dry-docked and converted into an activity and playspace for children with disabilities, as part of a project led by The Harriet Trust.

With just 54 hours to complete the build, teams of contractors, tradespeople, and volunteers came together to overhaul the vessel inside and out — transforming it into a safe, welcoming environment for children to play, learn and socialise.

The Twinfix Contribution

Twinfix were brought in to design, supply and install glazed rooflights to bring natural light into the repurposed vessel. Working closely with the broader project team — including joiners, electricians, and accessibility specialists — our team delivered high-quality, fit-for-purpose roof glazing to support the transformation.

Despite the condensed timeline, the project was delivered successfully — and aired as part of Challenge Anneka’s sixth series. It remains a proud moment in Twinfix history.

“It was an unusual brief and a tight deadline, but the result proved what can be achieved when technical know-how meets a shared sense of purpose.” – Sarah Kench, Twinfix Director

Why It Still Matters

While the Sulwath project was unique, the underlying values continue to guide our business today:

  • Designing for functionality and inclusion
  • Delivering under pressure without compromising on quality
  • Collaborating with others to bring ideas to life

From education settings to transport infrastructure, we remain focused on creating safe, well-lit, and accessible spaces for people of all ages and abilities.

And yes — we still have the original photos, including a few taken with Anneka Rice and the BBC crew. A rare but welcome reminder that even the most complex builds can be delivered with clarity, speed and care when the right team comes together.

A Lasting Legacy

As we continue our anniversary reflections, the Challenge Anneka project reminds us of the importance of adaptability, social value, and building environments that make a difference. It’s a story we’re proud to share — and one that continues to reflect who we are today.

Creating Space to Thrive at Whipman Woods Primary

When Morgan Sindall were building the brand-new Whipman Woods Primary School in Worksop, they needed more than just canopies — they needed safe, durable and great-looking structures that would support outdoor learning from day one.

That’s where Twinfix came in.

A Bespoke Canopy Package with the Future in Mind

We were brought in to design, manufacture and install two canopies that would blend seamlessly with the school’s contemporary setting and meet the practical needs of staff and pupils alike.

  • Canopy 1: A free-standing mono-pitch aluminium canopy with squared posts, providing a 17.1m x 4.5m sheltered space ideal for outdoor classrooms, queueing, or social zones.

  • Canopy 2: A reverse mono-pitch cantilevered canopy with circular posts, offering an open, unobstructed area that keeps foot traffic moving and sightlines clear.

Both structures were glazed using our ML16NF Multi-Link-Panel system, featuring 16mm polycarbonate for durability, natural light and long-term weather resistance.

To boost on-site safety, we also supplied post protectors, colour-matched and built to withstand the everyday knocks of a busy school environment.

Built for the Way Schools Really Work

At Twinfix, we know schools don’t stand still. That’s why our canopies are designed not just to look the part on handover day — but to keep performing for years to come. Whether it’s pouring with rain or blazing sunshine, Whipman Woods Primary now has two reliable outdoor zones that support teaching, learning and play, whatever the weather.

Why Schools Are Investing in Canopies – And How Twinfix Is Supporting the Education Sector Nationwide

In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the number of schools investing in canopies – and it’s not without reason. With mounting pressure on educational facilities to create more versatile, weather-resilient, and inclusive spaces, canopies are becoming a practical and strategic solution. At Twinfix, we’re proud to support schools across the UK with bespoke canopy and roof glazing systems that enhance both the learning environment and the overall functionality of school estates.

Creating Space Without Building Extensions

As school rolls grow and learning methods evolve, many institutions are finding themselves in need of additional space. Canopies offer a cost-effective alternative to traditional building extensions by creating sheltered areas that can be used all year round. Whether for outdoor classrooms, covered play areas, walkways, or dining spaces, they provide immediate flexibility without the lengthy planning and construction timelines associated with permanent structures.

Enhancing Outdoor Learning and Play

The benefits of outdoor learning are well documented. According to a report from Natural England, 85% of teachers surveyed noted improvements in pupils’ social skills following outdoor lessons, while 72% saw increased engagement with learning. However, the UK’s unpredictable weather can be a barrier. Twinfix canopies help overcome this challenge by providing durable shelter, enabling outdoor activities in all seasons.

Our aluminium-framed structures, paired with tough, UV-stable multiwall or solid polycarbonate roofing, ensure long-term durability with minimal maintenance – ideal for busy school environments.

Improving Safety and Accessibility

Covered walkways and entrances not only offer comfort but also significantly improve safety. Slip hazards caused by wet surfaces are reduced, and students can move between buildings more easily in inclement weather. Our non-fragile roofing systems are designed to comply with the HSE’s ACR[M]001:2019 Test for Fragility, ensuring peace of mind for school leaders and facilities managers.

Supporting Wellbeing and Inclusion

Canopies play a key role in creating inclusive environments. For pupils with additional needs, outdoor areas with appropriate cover can offer calming, sensory-friendly spaces that support wellbeing and behavioural development. Schools are increasingly looking to build environments that support every pupil’s needs – and our team works closely with each client to ensure the design, layout and materials selected are appropriate to their specific requirements.

Tailored, Trusted, and Nationwide

At Twinfix, we understand that no two schools are the same. That’s why every solution we deliver is bespoke. Whether it’s a vibrant structure to complement a primary school playground or a sleek, large-span canopy for a secondary school or academy, we tailor our offering to align with the aesthetic, functional, and budgetary needs of each facility.

From concept and design to manufacture and installation, our end-to-end service ensures smooth project delivery. And with nationwide coverage, we’re trusted by schools, MATs, and local authorities across England, Scotland, and Wales.

Delivering Long-Term Value for Education

The shift toward outdoor learning, wellbeing, and space optimisation has made canopy installations a smart, future-focused investment for schools across the UK. With a proven track record in the education sector and a commitment to quality, compliance, and innovation, Twinfix is proud to play a part in supporting schools to deliver engaging and accessible environments for all.

Case Study – Willow Grove Primary School

Twinfix partnered with principal contractor Willmott Dermott on the construction of the newly opened Willow Grove Primary School in Wixam, contributing two custom-designed, canopies that enhance the school’s outdoor environment. These canopies were crafted to provide essential shelter and promote outdoor learning and play, integral to the school’s facilities.

The project involved the installation of two distinct free-standing mono-pitch canopies. One of the canopies was designed as an entrance canopy, measuring 4.82 metres down the slope with a 22-metre run. This structure creates a welcoming and protected area for students and staff as they enter the school, shielding them from the elements during arrival and departure times. The other canopy, attached to a classroom, measured 4.82 metres down the slope with a 26.5-metre run. This canopy extends the classroom’s usable space, providing a sheltered area that enhances outdoor learning and play.

Both canopies were supported by timber posts, which integrate a natural aesthetic into the new school’s design. The timber posts were equipped with post protectors to ensure safety in these high-traffic areas, reducing the risk of injury and maintaining a secure environment for the students.

The canopies were fitted with Twinfix’s Multi-Link-Panel Non-Fragile (NF) system, which is classified as non-fragile in accordance with the HSE’s ACR[M]001:2019 drop test. This roofing system features 16mm opal multiwall polycarbonate panels that provide excellent light diffusion and UV protection while reducing glare. This ensures that the outdoor spaces beneath the canopies remain comfortable and functional in various weather conditions.

The aluminium frames of the canopies were powder-coated in RAL 7016 (anthracite grey), offering a modern, durable finish that complements the school’s architectural style. The powder coating protects the aluminium from the elements, ensuring long-lasting performance and minimal maintenance.

With the new Willow Grove Primary School now open, the canopies are set to play a significant role in the school’s daily operations. The entrance canopy will facilitate a smoother arrival and departure experience for students and staff, while the classroom-attached canopy will extend the outdoor learning and play areas. Twinfix’s involvement in this project underscores the company’s expertise in delivering high-quality, customised canopy solutions that combine functionality with aesthetic appeal.

These canopies will provide lasting value and support the school community for years to come.

Twinfix Enhances Bradford Station with Modern Roof Glazing

Twinfix, a leading UK manufacturer of canopies and roof glazing solutions, has successfully completed a significant project at Bradford station, providing a durable and visually enhanced roofing solution. This initiative forms part of a major government investment in Yorkshire’s rail infrastructure and aligns with Bradford’s designation as the UK’s City of Culture for 2025.

Bradford station, a key transport hub in the region, required a roof glazing upgrade to improve safety, sustainability, and passenger experience. Twinfix was selected for its expertise in the rail sector, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality, long-lasting solutions for station refurbishments across the UK.

The project involved the design, manufacture, and supply of Twinfix’s innovative Multi-Link-Panel NF (Non-Fragile) system, featuring polycarbonate glazing. Each panel was fitted with 6mm clear solid polycarbonate, a high-performance material offering superior strength and impact resistance compared to traditional glass. Unlike glass, which can crack, shatter, or degrade over time, polycarbonate provides a safe, durable, and low-maintenance solution, ensuring long-term performance while maintaining excellent clarity.

The Multi-Link-Panel NF system offers several key benefits:

  • Non-fragile design – Enhances safety for maintenance teams, reducing the risk of accidents.

  • Quick installation – Pre-assembled panels speed up the installation process, minimising disruption to station operations.

  • Lightweight and strong – Provides high impact resistance while being significantly lighter than glass, reducing structural load.

  • UV protection– Maintains clarity and durability over time, preventing yellowing or degradation.

  • Sustainable solution – Long lifespan and fully recyclable components support eco-friendly infrastructure.

David Smith MCIOB, Production Director at Miller Fabrications, where the dry assembly process took place, praised Twinfix for their professionalism and service:

“Working with Twinfix on the Bradford station project was a seamless and highly efficient process. From initial planning through to delivery, their attention to detail and commitment to excellence were evident at every stage. The level of organisation, clear communication, and overall service provided by the Twinfix team was fantastic. Their expertise ensured a smooth dry assembly process at our facility in Scotland, making installation on-site both efficient and hassle-free. I would not hesitate to recommend Twinfix for future projects requiring high-quality, innovative roof glazing solutions.”

We are proud to have played a role in the regeneration of Bradford station as part of this wider investment in Yorkshire’s rail network,” said Vicky Evans, Director at Twinfix. “Our Multi-Link-Panel NF system provides a modern, lightweight, and impact-resistant solution, ensuring the station remains a safe and welcoming environment for passengers.”

This investment in Bradford’s infrastructure supports the city’s preparations for its role as the UK’s City of Culture 2025, reinforcing its position as a key destination for both commuters and visitors.

As a trusted partner to the rail sector, Twinfix remains committed to delivering cutting-edge, sustainable solutions for station refurbishments nationwide.
