Delivered as part of Norfolk County Council’s Local First Inclusion programme, the new Fred Nicholson Special School in Swaffham represents a major investment in specialist education. The purpose-built facility has been designed to support children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), with accessibility, wellbeing and flexibility built into every aspect of the site.
Twinfix was pleased to play a role in this landmark project, working alongside R G Carter as Main Contractor and NPS Norwich as Architect, to supply and install bespoke canopy structures that improve accessibility, safety, and the overall quality of the outdoor environment.
Creating Covered Routes and Usable Outdoor Space
In collaboration with the wider project team, Twinfix designed, manufactured and installed four fabricated lean-to canopies, providing approximately 200 linear metres of cover and around 600m² of sheltered space.
Positioned around the new school building and outside key classroom areas, the canopies provide sheltered walkways and covered external spaces that can be used throughout the year — supporting safe movement between areas, as well as outdoor learning, play and supervised breaks.
This is particularly valuable in SEND environments, where the ability to move safely and comfortably through the school estate can play an important role in supporting pupils’ daily routines and wellbeing.
To further enhance safety, each canopy post was fitted with impact-resistant protectors, helping to maintain a secure setting for pupils, staff and visitors.
Built for Strength, Safety and Long-Term Performance
The canopies were constructed using Twinfix’s Multi-Link-Panel Non-Fragile roof glazing system, chosen for its strength, durability and proven safety performance.
For this project, the system was glazed with solid opaque polycarbonate, meeting the specific requirements of the school environment. The opaque finish supports privacy and shading, while retaining the durability and impact resistance that polycarbonate is well known for.
Alongside a robust aluminium framework, the finished structures provide a clean, modern aesthetic and a long service life — a practical solution for a high-traffic educational setting where reliability and low maintenance are essential.
Independently Tested Non-Fragile Roofing
Safety was an important consideration for the project team, particularly where future roof access may be required for inspection and maintenance.
Twinfix’s Multi-Link-Panel system is independently tested to ACR[M]001:2019 Class B Non-Fragile, supporting compliance and improving safety where access to the roof surface may be necessary.
Key Benefits of the Multi-Link-Panel System
- Non-Fragile to ACR[M]001:2019 Class B
- Strong, corrosion-resistant aluminium framework
- Solid opaque polycarbonate glazing for privacy, shade and impact resistance
- Prefabricated modular construction for consistent quality and efficient installation
- Lightweight yet robust design suited to longer canopy runs and large covered areas
- Sustainable material choices, including fully recyclable aluminium and long-life polycarbonate
A Positive Result for the School and Wider Community
The new three-storey facility on Lynn Road includes 17 classrooms, specialist SEND provision, sixth-form space and dedicated areas for sensory, physical and life-skills development.
Twinfix’s canopy installations form a practical part of this inclusive design approach — extending usable space beyond the classroom and creating safe, sheltered outdoor areas that can be used in all weather conditions.
Project Team Feedback
To reflect the collaborative approach taken throughout the build, Twinfix will also be including feedback from both the construction and design teams.
Ed Carr, Project Manager, R G Carter, commented: “Twinfix have been a pleasure to work with throughout the canopy project at Swaffham. The team have been professional, responsive, and proactive on site, with a clear focus on quality and safety. The installation has been well managed and we’re very pleased with the progress and finish of the works.”
Partnering for Positive Outcomes
The Fred Nicholson Special School project highlights Twinfix’s continued commitment to the education sector and our ability to deliver canopy and roof glazing solutions that support safer, more inclusive learning environments. Working closely with R G Carter and NPS Norwich, Twinfix delivered a canopy package that meets the functional needs of the site while providing a clean architectural finish and long-term value.
