Salford Central Station has undergone a major £10 million transformation, creating a brighter, more accessible and welcoming environment for passengers travelling across Greater Manchester.

As part of the redevelopment, Twinfix supplied a bespoke roof glazing solution designed to maximise natural daylight, support long-term safety and integrate seamlessly with the station’s new architectural appearance.

Project Overview

Working alongside Orchard Roofing, Story Contracting, Arcadis and Seed Architects, Twinfix supplied a 6mm clear Multi-Link-Panel Non-Fragile (NF) roof glazing system complete with bespoke aluminium box-section supports and integrated access hatches.

Twinfix's Role in Delivering a Safe and Light-Filled Roof Glazing Solution

Designed specifically for the demands of a busy rail environment, the roof glazing system was engineered to integrate with a newly constructed steel support framework while providing a durable, low-maintenance and non-fragile roofing solution.

Throughout the project, Twinfix worked closely with the wider design team to ensure the glazing system aligned precisely with the structural and architectural requirements of the station refurbishment.

A Collaborative Approach to Restoration

Delivered by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) in partnership with Network Rail, the wider station upgrade included a range of passenger-focused improvements, including new accessible toilets, a modern ticket office, upgraded platforms and ramps, enhanced passenger information systems and a covered walkway linking the new lift on Platform 1.

The replacement of the upper-level roof formed an important element of the project, requiring a solution capable of improving natural light levels while meeting the safety, performance and maintenance requirements expected within a live railway environment.

To support these objectives, Twinfix supplied its Multi-Link-Panel NF roof glazing system, incorporating:

  • 6mm clear polycarbonate glazing to maximise natural daylight
  • ACR[M]001:2019 Class B non-fragile performance
  • UV protection on both sides for long-term durability
  • Factory-assembled panels for quality consistency and efficient installation
  • Integrated in-line access hatches to facilitate safe future maintenance

Close collaboration between all project partners was essential throughout the design and development stages. Twinfix participated in technical reviews and coordination meetings, working alongside the specialist structural engineer to refine fixing details, geometry and tolerances. This ensured complete compatibility between the steel support structure and the roof glazing system, resulting in a streamlined and fully integrated solution.
