Beeston Station: Sympathetic Roof Glazing Restoration with Multi-Link-Panel

Project Overview

As part of the wider refurbishment, our Multi-Link-Panel Non-Fragile roof glazing system, incorporating clear solid Exolon polycarbonate, was specified to renew the station canopy glazing, bringing more natural light to the platforms while providing a durable solution designed with future maintenance in mind.

 

Restoring a Historic Station

Grade II-listed Beeston Station dates back to 1847 and retains important elements of its historic railway architecture.

Network Rail’s £1.36 million refurbishment programme included the renewal of the station’s historic canopy and platform shelters, where ageing roof glazing needed to be replaced as part of the wider restoration.

The challenge was to introduce modern roof glazing performance without detracting from the character of the existing station, while also addressing the practical requirements of safety, access and long-term maintenance.

The Twinfix Solution

Twinfix supplied our Multi-Link-Panel Non-Fragile roof glazing system across four canopy lanterns, each measuring 6 metres in width.

The system incorporated clear solid Exolon polycarbonate, selected to maximise daylight beneath the canopy and retain a clear glazed appearance sympathetic to the original structure.

Its lightweight construction made polycarbonate particularly suited to the refurbishment of the existing canopy, while its high impact resistance provides the durability required for a busy station environment.

Multi-Link-Panel is a modular, factory assembled system, reducing the amount of assembly required at roof level and supporting efficient installation. This is an important advantage when delivering works within an operational railway.

Safe Access Designed In

A key consideration was how the canopy would be safely inspected and maintained in the future.

To address this, 14 integrated in-line access hatches were incorporated across the four lanterns, providing purpose designed access for inspection, cleaning and gutter maintenance.

Rather than creating separate access arrangements or removing glazing panels when maintenance is required, the hatches form part of the Multi-Link-Panel system itself.

The system is also tested in accordance with ACR[M]001:2019, achieving a Class B non-fragile rating and adding an important level of safety for future roof level activities.

Collaboration Throughout

Successful delivery relied on close coordination between the specialist teams involved.

Colt Construction, as principal contractor, managed the wider station refurbishment, with Orchard Roofing & Building delivering the roofing works. Haydn Evans Consulting provided design expertise, helping to develop a solution appropriate for the historic station and its operational requirements.

Twinfix provided the specialist roof glazing system and technical expertise, drawing on more than 35 years’ experience delivering canopy and roof glazing solutions across the UK rail network.

The project also brought together several established, independently owned family businesses. Each contributed specialist knowledge and a shared focus on quality and long-term performance to deliver the project for Network Rail.
