Golborne High School – Case Study

Twinfix has over thirty years’ experience designing, manufacturing, and installing school canopies, playground shelters and covered walkways for education establishments, including nursery schools, primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and universities. Each structure is designed to fit and enhance its surroundings while providing the school with the type of canopy, playground shelter or walkway they need. Twinfix provide a full in-house service, from design right through to installation.

Outdoor areas that are currently not usable during hot or wet weather conditions can be made into fully productive parts of the school or nursery. Canopies installed adjacent to a nursery classroom create an easily accessible area for sand and water play, while a walkway can give protected transit for staff and pupils between buildings at any school site.

Golborne High School is a coeducational foundation secondary school located in Golborne, Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, England.

The oldest part of the school was opened in January 1954 and today it is a trust school under the umbrella of the newly formed Golborne and Lowton Co-operative Learning partnership.

Last year, Twinfix were approached by Parklands Services to design, manufacture and install three fabricated, lean-to mono-pitch canopies at the school. The canopies all served a different purpose: one provided cover for an outdoor eating area, provide shelter to pupils outside their classroom as they learn and play and to provide cover to parents and students waiting to enter and leave.

The structures spanning a total of 162 square metres comprise of Twinfix’s innovative Multi-Link-Panel Non-Fragile (NF) roofing system, glazed with 25mm multiwall polycarbonate. The roofs are non-fragile in accordance with the HSE’s test for fragility ACR[M]001:2019, an important factor when installing canopies where children may try and access the roof. Each canopy has an aluminium frame, powder-coated to RAL 7016 anthracite grey.

Being a one-stop shop for designing, manufacturing and installing such outdoor structures Twinfix are proud to offer a seamless service to any school or other education establishment looking for a canopy or walkway. The staff and pupils at Golborne High School are delighted with the latest additions to their school.

A Legacy of Life Skills

As a family business with a long history in north west England, Twinfix is more than an organisation, it is part of the community. In recent times, Twinfix has been in the position to support local initiatives, which themselves reflect the Twinfix ethos, values and mindset. Nowhere is this more evident than junior football.

Warriors

To this end, Twinfix have started sponsoring a local junior’s football team. The Witton Albion Junior Football Club (under nines), known as the ‘Witton Warriors’ proudly display the Twinfix name on their shirts. The Warriors have presented Twinfix Director, Vicky Evans with a framed shirt to signify the team’s thanks for the generous sponsorship.

“Witton Albion Junior Warriors U9’s were thrilled to receive such generous sponsorship from Twinfix, a company whose ethos and key values mirrors that of the team. Our aim is to encourage teamwork, fitness, responsibility and decision making in a safe space which celebrates all players’ uniqueness’s and allows them to enjoy playing football and make life-long friends.” Wayne Hankinson, Witton Albion Junior Warriors U9’S Team Manager.

The beautiful game

Twinfix’s founder, Graham Kench was a lover of football and always admired the life skills which can be gained from playing the game at grass roots level. Obviously, there is teamwork as each member of the squad is relied upon to do their job as part of a larger plan, but this brings responsibility and accountability too. Reliability, discipline and respect fall in with being part of something bigger than yourself. Along with these character traits are ‘wellbeing’ benefits. Physical fitness, exercise, being out in the fresh air, socialising, and mindfulness work hand in hand to develop skills that are just as useful in the work environment, as they are on the football pitch.

Part of the Community

Twinfix are proud to support the ‘Witton Warriors’ football team and are pleased to be involved in the local community. The Witton Albion Junior Football Club and football team support and encourage these young people, teaching them valuable life skills to help them in their futures. Ben Evans, proudly wears one of the Warriors shirts, displaying the name of the company his grandfather started over 30 years ago.

This year

This year sees many more exciting initiatives for Twinfix, with more work within the local community and supporting young people and we will be publishing more on this in the coming months.

Looking back

It has been a decade since Graham left us. In that time, the team he loved has evolved, but we are all still guided by his ethos of teamwork and supporting each other. We are very proud of what we have achieved and know that Graham would be too.

This is written and dedicated to the memory of our founder, Graham Kench.
