At Twinfix, we believe that outdoor space should be an extension of the classroom. Recently, we had the privilege of working with Black Cat Building Consultancy and main contractor TJM to deliver a tailored scheme at Acre Hall Primary School in Urmston. Our scope included the design, manufacture and installation of a free-standing mono-pitch canopy, four access hatches, and ten post protectors — all finished to high standards of performance and aesthetics.
Project Context
Acre Hall Primary serves children aged 3 to 11 across the Trafford area. This project represents an investment in enhancing the school’s infrastructure, bolstering outdoor learning facilities and improving the daily experience for pupils and staff.
Twinfix’s Role in Supporting Acre Hall’s Vision
Working in close coordination with Black Cat Building Consultancy and contractor TJM, Twinfix undertook a full turnkey package:
-
Free-standing mono-pitch canopy — providing weather-protected outdoor space.
-
Access hatches (4 units) — to facilitate maintenance and inspection.
-
Post protectors (10 units, navy) — safeguarding structural elements in high-traffic zones.
Our approach emphasised durability, ease of maintenance and visual harmony with the school’s aesthetic. The canopy structure was powder coated in RAL 7016 (anthracite grey), a neutral yet robust finish that complements many school architectures.
For glazing, we selected our Multi-Link-Panel NF system, using 16mm multi-wall polycarbonate — a system certified as non-fragile, delivering light diffusion, UV protection, and robustness without the weight of traditional glass.
Technical Highlights & Challenges
-
Mono-pitch roof form: chosen for simplicity and to align drainage effectively.
-
Access hatches: key for servicing and cleaning, designed to integrate cleanly into the roof surface.
-
Post protectors: placed at ten posts in navy finish, protecting against everyday impact while offering a visual contrast to the canopy frame.
-
Safety & compliance: the Multi-Link-Panel NF system is designed to comply with drop-test and non-fragile standards, reducing risk during maintenance.
-
Powder-coated aluminium framing: lightweight, resilient, and low-maintenance, while achieving the desired aesthetic.
While this canopy installation took place during school holidays, installations of this nature are often undertaken in busy, live school environments. Twinfix has extensive experience delivering projects during term-time with minimal disruption, working sensitively around classroom activity and in line with safeguarding policies. All members of our installation team are DBS checked, giving schools confidence that works can be carried out safely and professionally.
Outcomes & Benefits
The completed installation delivers clear and measurable value to Acre Hall:
-
Enhanced teaching space — the canopy extends outdoor use in all weather, giving staff greater flexibility.
-
Improved pupil experience — protection from the elements encourages outdoor play and learning even when conditions are not ideal.
-
Maintenance efficiency — the access hatches and non-fragile roof system simplify upkeep and inspection.
-
Robust protection — post protectors and high-performance finishes provide resilience in a high-traffic educational setting.
-
Visual coherence — the anthracite frame and navy accents maintain a clean, professional look that complements the school environment.
We are proud to have contributed to Acre Hall’s ambitions for a more adaptable, safe, and inspiring learning environment.
