The Orchards School in Stretford approached Twinfix to help enhance its outdoor learning environment. Catering to children with a range of learning difficulties, the school required a bespoke canopy to create a safe, inclusive, and stimulating space for outdoor learning and play.
Twinfix was commissioned to design, manufacture and install a tailored lean-to canopy, providing sheltered space to support the diverse needs of the students while complementing the school’s facilities.
The project involved the design and installation of a 25-metre-long canopy with a 4.9-metre projection, offering extensive coverage for year-round outdoor use. Constructed from high-quality aluminium, the canopy was powder coated in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, delivering durability alongside a modern, sleek aesthetic.
The structure was glazed with Twinfix’s Multi-Link-Panel Non-Fragile roofing system, incorporating 16mm opal polycarbonate. Classified as ‘non-fragile’ in accordance with the HSE’s ACR[M]001:2019 drop test, this system provides diffused natural light while ensuring robust safety standards are met.
Safety was paramount in this SEN setting. The canopy incorporated anti-climb paint to deter access to the roof, post protectors to prevent impact injuries, and an integrated guttering system to safely channel rainwater away from play areas. These measures combined to create a safe, functional and child-friendly environment.
