Opened in 1846, Filey Station in North Yorkshire is a Grade II listed building designed by G. T. Andrews. A vital gateway for generations of holidaymakers visiting the seaside town, the station holds both architectural and communal value.
When areas of decay required refurbishment, concerns were raised about preserving the station’s historic character. In particular, the replacement of the trainshed lantern with a modern polycarbonate solution sparked debate among heritage bodies. While Historic England highlighted potential impacts on the building’s appearance, North Yorkshire Council, the Railway Heritage Trust and Network Rail emphasised the need for a sustainable, long-term solution that respected the station’s heritage while supporting safety and future use.
Twinfix was appointed to supply and install a bespoke glazing system for the lantern replacement. Known as the “Pioneers of Polycarbonate,” Twinfix has a proven record of delivering heritage-sensitive solutions that provide the look and feel of glass while offering the durability, safety and sustainability benefits of modern materials.
The chosen system used Twinfix’s polycarbonate glazing, which is lightweight, indistinguishable from glass once installed, and significantly easier to maintain. The solution allowed light to flood into the trainshed, preserving the architectural qualities of Andrews’ original design while reducing loading stresses and ensuring compliance with modern health and safety standards.
