Project Overview

Twinfix was commissioned to design, manufacture, and install two bespoke canopy structures at Imjin Barracks in Gloucester, a key military site housing the Headquarters of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC). As part of a broader initiative to provide modern, sustainable accommodation for Army personnel, Twinfix was tasked with creating canopy solutions that not only offered essential weather protection but also contributed to the site’s renewable energy objectives.

Twinfix's Role in Enhancing Sustainability and Functionality at Imjin Barracks

Twinfix designed and delivered two custom canopy structures that met the practical needs of the site while aligning with the Army’s sustainability goals. By integrating photovoltaic solar panels into the walkway canopy, Twinfix supported the site’s renewable energy objectives, enhancing both the functionality and environmental credentials of the project.

Project Overview

The project included the installation of two canopies at Imjin Barracks:

  • Entrance Canopy: A part free-standing, part lean-to mono-pitch design providing weather protection and enhancing the building’s entrance.

  • Walkway Canopy: A free-standing mono-pitch structure designed to offer shelter and facilitate easy movement between buildings.

Both structures were constructed from high-quality aluminium, powder-coated in RAL7016, ensuring durability and a sleek, modern aesthetic. The entrance canopy featured the Multi-Link-Panel Non-Fragile system with 7.5mm laminated clear glass, allowing natural light to brighten the space. The walkway canopy, spanning 56 metres, was built with pressed aluminium sheets for maximum durability, with one hip and one valley to ensure effective water drainage.

The walkway canopy integrated photovoltaic solar panels, contributing to the site’s renewable energy generation and supporting the Army’s Net Zero Carbon goals.

Outcome

The canopies at Imjin Barracks successfully provide shelter for personnel while contributing to the broader environmental objectives of the site. The integration of solar panels into the walkway canopy enhances the energy efficiency of the building, reducing reliance on external energy sources. The aluminium canopies offer robust, long-lasting protection while also meeting the Army’s sustainability targets.

Key Benefits

  • Sustainability: Photovoltaic solar panels contribute to renewable energy generation, supporting Net Zero Carbon goals.

  • Durability: Aluminium construction, powder-coated in RAL7016, ensures long-lasting weather resistance and minimal maintenance.

  • Weather Protection: Both canopies offer essential shelter, providing year-round protection for personnel moving between buildings.

  • Energy Efficiency: The solar panels on the walkway canopy help reduce energy consumption, aligning with the Army’s environmental goals.

  • Aesthetic Integration: The canopies complement the architectural design of the new building, enhancing the visual appeal of the site.
