Project Overview

Worcester Station, a Grade II listed building with a history spanning over 150 years, faced significant challenges in renovating its platform canopy. The original structure, made of fragile glass panels suspended over large passenger areas, was deteriorating, presenting safety risks. Twinfix was commissioned to design, manufacture, and install a new canopy that would maintain the station’s historic aesthetic while meeting modern safety regulations and improving the passenger experience.

Twinfix's Role in Restoring the Canopy at Worcester Station

The project involved the renovation of the station’s iconic platform canopy, which required the careful preservation of its Victorian-era design while addressing current safety standards. Twinfix’s bespoke polycarbonate glazing system was chosen for its ability to replicate the appearance of the original glass while offering enhanced durability, safety, and reduced weight.

The solution incorporated Twinfix’s Multi-Link Aluminium Support System, a modern framework that ensured structural integrity while matching the Georgian wire aesthetic of the original iron and glass canopy. The polycarbonate glazing, classified as ‘non-fragile’ in accordance with HSE’s ACR[M]001:2019 drop test, provided a safer, lightweight alternative to traditional glass.

Key features of the renovation:

  • Non-fragile polycarbonate for improved safety and compliance with CDM regulations

  • Aluminium frame powder coated to replicate the appearance of the original ironwork

  • Maximised natural light to improve the passenger experience under the canopy

  • Heritage preservation with a bespoke design that maintained the historic look of the canopy

  • Sustainability and efficiency through lightweight materials that reduced installation costs and time
