Delivering a Continuous Covered Walkway for Everyday School Life

Twinfix recently completed the design, manufacture and installation of a bespoke free-standing mono-pitch canopy system at Sedgefield Primary School in County Durham, working alongside Portakabin to create a continuous covered walkway that enhances movement around the new modular school building.

Designed to provide reliable weather protection throughout the year, the new canopy offers a practical, durable and visually cohesive solution that complements the contemporary architecture of the development while creating a safe, accessible route for pupils, staff and visitors.

Key Project Features

  • Client Sedgefield Primary
  • Main Contractor Portakabin
  • System Used Multi-Link-Panel Non-Fragile
  • Project Type Covered Walkway
  • Sector Schools & Academies

Project Overview

As part of a wider modular development at Sedgefield Primary School, Twinfix was appointed to design, manufacture and install a bespoke covered walkway that connects key areas of the campus while providing year-round protection from the elements.

The completed installation comprises two free-standing mono-pitch canopies, measuring 33.2 metres and 34.6 metres respectively, each with a 2.6 metre projection and incorporating a hip and valley arrangement to create a continuous, uninterrupted covered route.

Manufactured from aluminium and powder-coated in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, the canopy has been designed to integrate seamlessly with the school’s modern buildings, providing a durable, low-maintenance solution that enhances both the functionality and appearance of the site.

Twinfix's Role in Delivering a Bespoke Canopy Solution

Twinfix supplied and installed a bespoke aluminium canopy system featuring the Multi-Link-Panel Non-Fragile roof glazing system with 16mm opal multiwall polycarbonate.

Engineered specifically for the project, the lightweight roof glazing allows diffused natural daylight to illuminate the walkway while providing dependable weather protection throughout the seasons.

Manufactured in accordance with UKCA requirements to BS EN 1090-1, the structure combines long-term durability with a clean architectural aesthetic. Square aluminium support posts and integrated aluminium guttering complete the system, creating a contemporary canopy that requires minimal maintenance while delivering reliable long-term performance.

Supporting Modern Education Environments

Covered walkways are an important feature within today’s education sector, improving movement around school campuses while encouraging greater use of external spaces throughout the year.

Working closely with Portakabin, Twinfix delivered a canopy solution that complements the modular building design while providing a safe, sheltered route between buildings. The free-standing design offers structural flexibility and integrates seamlessly within the wider development, creating an attractive external feature that enhances the day-to-day experience of pupils, staff and visitors.

Outcome

The completed installation provides Sedgefield Primary School with a modern, durable and visually cohesive covered walkway that supports year-round movement around the campus.

By combining weather protection, naturally diffused daylight and a contemporary aluminium structure, the canopy enhances accessibility while complementing the clean architectural lines of the new modular buildings.

The project demonstrates Twinfix’s ability to deliver bespoke canopy systems for education environments, supporting modern methods of construction while creating practical, long-lasting external spaces.
