Twinfix recently completed the design, manufacture and installation of three bespoke canopy structures at the new Thomas Telford Primary Free School in Priorslee, Telford, working alongside main contractor REDS10. Designed to provide practical weather protection across key areas of the new school, the canopies create sheltered spaces outside the Reception and Nursery classrooms, alongside a distinctive covered entrance for pupils, staff and visitors.
Thomas Telford Primary Free School is a new purpose-built school developed to meet growing demand for primary education within the expanding Priorslee community. The new school provides places for 420 primary pupils alongside a 26-place nursery, with modern facilities designed to create a high-quality learning environment for children and staff. As part of the development, Twinfix was appointed by REDS10 to deliver three bespoke canopy structures serving the Reception classrooms, Nursery classrooms and main school entrance. Together, the structures provide practical sheltered areas while complementing the contemporary appearance of the new school building.
Twinfix designed, manufactured and installed three bespoke free-standing mono-pitch canopies, providing sheltered areas across the Reception, Nursery and main entrance areas of the new school.
An 18.61 metre long canopy was installed outside the Reception classrooms, with a second 11.41 metre long canopy serving the Nursery classrooms.
Both classroom canopies were glazed with 16mm opal multiwall polycarbonate, providing weather protection while allowing natural daylight into the covered areas below. The canopies create bright, practical external spaces that can be used for learning and play throughout the school year.
At the school’s main entrance, Twinfix installed a 12.9 metre long canopy featuring a solid metal roof with aluminium fascia and soffit.
The larger entrance structure provides practical weather protection while creating a clearly defined and welcoming approach to the school.
All three canopy structures were powder-coated in RAL 7022 Umbra Grey, providing a consistent finish that complements the contemporary exterior of the new building.
Dark grey post protectors were also fitted to the canopy columns, providing additional protection in areas regularly used by young children.
The structures were UKCA marked to BS EN 1090-1, with Twinfix responsible for the complete canopy package from design and manufacture through to installation on site.
Providing access to suitable outdoor spaces is particularly important within Reception and Nursery environments, where outdoor learning and play form an integral part of the school day. The polycarbonate classroom canopies provide sheltered transitional spaces between the classrooms and external areas, helping teachers and pupils make greater use of the outdoors throughout the year. The opal polycarbonate glazing allows natural daylight through while providing protection from the elements, helping to create comfortable and versatile covered spaces. At the front of the school, the solid-roof entrance canopy provides a sheltered and easily identifiable arrival point for pupils, staff and visitors. By delivering all three structures as part of one coordinated canopy package, Twinfix was able to provide a consistent solution across the development while tailoring each canopy to the requirements of its individual location.
The completed installation provides Thomas Telford Primary Free School with three durable and visually cohesive canopy structures that enhance key external areas of the new school. The Reception and Nursery canopies create bright, sheltered spaces that support outdoor learning and play, while the solid-roof entrance canopy provides a protected and clearly defined arrival point. Working closely with REDS10, Twinfix delivered the complete canopy package from design and manufacture through to installation, contributing to a modern new education facility designed to serve the growing Priorslee community for years to come.
