Non-fragility is a critical requirement for overhead roof glazing and is directly linked to safe access for inspection and maintenance. Industry guidance recognises falls through fragile roofs as a significant hazard, making the specification of tested non-fragile roof assemblies essential.
Importantly, non-fragility applies to the performance of a complete roofing system rather than an individual material. The interaction between glazing panels, fixings and supporting framework determines how a system behaves under impact, and even high-strength glazing can fail if it is not properly integrated into an engineered assembly.
The recognised method for assessing non-fragility is ACR[M]001:2019, which evaluates the performance of a representative roof assembly under controlled impact conditions. The test simulates a human fall onto a roof surface and classifies assemblies according to the extent of damage sustained.
Within this framework, a Class B designation represents the highest level of performance that can be achieved by polycarbonate roof glazing systems. Achieving and maintaining this classification requires careful engineering of both the glazing and the supporting structure.
Twinfix has invested in a dedicated in-house test rig constructed in accordance with ACR[M] requirements, enabling regular assessment of the Multi-Link-Panel NF assembly. This facility allows our engineering team to validate design refinements, confirm consistency of manufacture and ensure continued compliance with Class B performance criteria.
The Multi-Link-Panel NF system has been developed as an integrated assembly in which the aluminium framing, panel retention method and polycarbonate glazing work together to resist impact and prevent panel displacement. Every polycarbonate configuration within the Multi-Link-Panel NF range has achieved a Class B designation when tested as an assembly.
Comparative testing undertaken by Twinfix has demonstrated that alternative glazing arrangements, including polycarbonate and laminated glass installed in standard glazing bars, may not achieve equivalent performance. These findings reinforce the importance of system design and assembly testing in delivering reliable non-fragile roof solutions.
Through continuous testing and engineering development, Twinfix ensures that its non-fragile assemblies deliver consistent, verifiable safety performance alongside durability and effective daylight transmission.
